<그날, 그곳의 공기>

The Atmosphere of That Day and Place

Jong Oh has been creating work that involves staying in the space where his pieces will be installed, observing and feeling the architectural elements and invisible sensations of that place, and visualizing these through constructive forms. Oh connotatively describes this as the resonance that the space possesses, and his work primarily involves creating the shape of this resonance by connecting thin wires and small objects. The installations he creates, like the "ROOM DRAWING" and "LINE SCULPTURE" series, are formed as if drawing or sculpting in space. While these are composed of thin, delicate, and small geometric points, lines, and planes, the spaces created by their connections are filled with an invisible force. In this way, he perceives space, discovers something, imposes order through arrangement, and conveys this to us as a certain situation. 전시장에 들어서면 어두운 공간에 반투명한 하얀 천, 직선과 곡선의 하얀 빛으로 이루어진 네모난 작품을 만나게 된다. 좀 더 자세하게 기술해 본다면, 우선 설치를 위해 전시 공간 위쪽에 와이어를 가로와 세로로 팽팽하게 고정하였다. 그리고 그 와이어에 네 면으로 공중에 하얀 천이 설치되어 사각형의 기본 구조를 이룬다. 여러 크기의 천은 커튼처럼 설치되어 있는데, 완전히 열려 넓은 면으로 나타나거나 천이 주름이 잡혀 접혀있는 모습으로 나타나며, 이런 다양한 천들이 네 면을 이중으로 감싸고 있다. 이들 사이로 하얀빛은 다양한 크기의 직선과 곡선으로 이루어져 있으며, 높낮이를 다르게 하여 설치되어 있다. 전시 제목에서 알 수 있듯이 작가는 이번 전시에서 전시 공간이 가지고 있는 가장 기본적이면서도 특징적인 요소인 하얀색을 작업의 소재로 선택하였다. 하얀색은 아무것도 아직 채워지지 않은 빈 곳이다. 미술에서 흰 캔버스나 종이는 무엇을 그리기 위한 공간, 화이트 큐브는 전시를 펼치기 위한 기본 공간으로 제공된다. 그렇지만 사실 하얀색은 우리가 관념적으로 그렇다고 여길 뿐 비어있지 않다. 이러한 관념적인 전시장의 하얀 벽이 고정된 요소로 불투명한 성질이라면, 작가가 제시하는 하얀 천은 그 뒤에 있는 것들을 어렴풋하게 보여주는 투과성을 보여준다. 이렇게 천으로 이루어진 하얀 면은 그 사이에 있는 하얀빛으로 더욱 밝게 보이거나 상대적으로 어둡게 보인다. 하얀색은 빛이 비치는 범위에 따라 광원에서 멀어질수록 그 차이를 드러낸다. 이는 작가가 제작한 하얀 빛이 그 자체로 밝기의 정도를 달리하고 있는 것에 기인하지만, 천의 겹침의 정도에 따라 온전히 밝은 빛을 볼 수 있거나 전혀 안 보이고, 심지어는 빛이 여러 개로 나뉘어 보이기도 하는 효과 때문이기도 하다. 이렇게 하얀색은 작가가 만들어 놓은 천과 빛의 조합으로 천과 천 사이, 천과 벽 사이에서 다채로운 결을 만들어 낸다.
그렇다면 이제 빛에 관한 이야기로 넘어가 보자. 사물이 가장 강한 열을 낼 때 빛은 하얀색을 띤다. 또한 백색광은 사물을 있는 그대로 보여주어 색이 없는 것처럼 느껴지는 빛이다. 이렇게 그가 사용하는 하얀 빛은 가장 충만하지만 거의 없는 듯이 느껴지는 존재이다. 이렇게 이번 전시에서 빛은 하얀색을 강조하면서 동시에 시각적으로 비어버린 공간을 드리우는 역할을 하고 있다. 작가의 이전 작업이 비어있는 공간을 무엇인가 연결되어 채워진 공간으로 머릿속에서 인식하게 했다면, 이번 작업은 이를 시각적으로 볼 수 있는 실재하는 빛으로 이를 대체하고 있다. 빛은 천으로 구분되는 공간을 채우고 그 경계인 천을 다시 밝혀주는 동시에 그 경계 너머에 있는 전시 공간을 비추기도 한다. 정도의 차이는 있지만 전시장과 관객에게 빛이 닿지 않는 곳은 없다. 따라서 우리는 눈으로 보는 빛과 함께 온전히 그 빛을 몸으로 받아들이게 된다. 이는 그의 작업을 실재하는 공간에 균열을 내어 그곳에 무엇인가를 존재하게 만드는데, 그것은 분리된 것 속에서 실재하며, 온전히 하나의 것이면서도 각자의 것으로 분리되는 방식으로 새로운 균열을 계속해서 만들어 낸다. 이는 어떤 시각적 움직임에 의해 공간을 가로질러 미끄러지는 것이 아니라 그 공간에 가만히 놓여있는 빛에서부터 퍼져나간다. 그래서 작품 밖에서 특정한 시점에서 보면 빛은 그곳을 마치 안개로 가득한 밀도 높은 공간으로 보이기도 하고, 천이 열린 부분에서 본다면 그것은 빛 그 자체로 인식될 뿐이다. 이렇듯 그에게 빛은 고정된 것이 아니라 관객의 움직임과 그에 따른 시선의 위치로 인해 정점에 다다르다 다시 흩어지고 다시 정점에 이르는 변화된 모습을 보인다. 어떻게 보면 그의 작업에 설치된 하얀 천과 빛은 서로를 이어주거나 서로를 방해하면서 각자의 방향을 새롭게 설정하는 계기를 스스로 부여하고 있는지도 모르겠다. 그렇기에 이전 작업은 그것을 구성하는 것들의 인과적인 연결로 인해 팽팽한 긴장감을 주로 드러냈다면, 이번 작업에서는 여기에 더해 무엇인가 긴장이 이완되어 가볍게 떠 있는 듯한 느낌을 받게 된다.
다시 그의 작업을 가능하게 하는 토대인 와이어로 돌아와 보자. 그의 작업에서 공중에 살짝 떠 있는 천과 빛은 와이어라는 단단한 틀이 없으면 그런 상태에 놓일 수 없다. 그런데 이러한 와이어를 우리가 서 있는 대지와 같은 존재로 상상할 수 있다면, 천과 빛은 이를 기반으로 우뚝 서 있는 모습으로 생각할 수 있게 될 것이다. 이와 같은 시각으로 공간을 다시 보게 된다면 전시장에 놓인 작품과 전시장 그리고 작품에 사용된 오브제들 사이의 관계가 묘하게 대구(對句)와 대비를 이루고 있다는 것을 인식하게 된다. 작품의 토대가 되는 와이어는 바닥과 수평을 이룬다. 하얀 천들은 공간의 사각형 벽과 평행을 이루며 놓여 있으며, 평평하고 단단한 벽과 다르게 천은 부드럽고 주름진 굴곡이 나타난다. 또한 불투명한 벽은 반투명한 천과 대비를 이룬다. 위에서도 언급했지만, 수평으로 팽팽한 와이어는 수직으로 떨어지는 얇은 하얀 천의 느슨함과 대비를 이룬다. 하얀빛은 어둠과 밝음이 뒤엉켜 서로의 차이를 드러내며, 퍼져나가는 빛은 선으로 이루어진 램프의 형태와 대조를 이룬다. 이는 어떤 대상이 가진 성질을 최대한 활용하면서도, 그것에서 우리가 감지하지 못한 감각을 새롭게 유도하고 있다. 사실 우리는 이미 하얀 빛으로 가득한 공간 안에 들어와서 또 다른 하얀 공간을 보고 있는 형국이며, 또다시 작품이 만들어 내는 공간 안에서 밖에 있는 전시장의 공간을 다시 보게 되는 반복되는 순환의 구조로 공간이 연출되는 것을 경험하게 된다. 물론 우리는 일반적으로 분리된 개별적 대상을 보게 될 때 그 자체만으로는 어떤 이어짐을 상상하기 힘들지만, 작가에 의해 균형과 조화 그리고 그것의 다름을 조율하는 방식에 기반한 그의 설치는 이를 가능하게 한다. 여기에 더해 내가 보지 못하고 인식하지 못한 무한한 재조합의 가능성이 남겨져 있다. 그러므로 이 작업은 관객의 멈춤과 움직임을 작품의 구성 요소로 활용하여 밀접하게 중첩되는 인과와 느슨하게 풀어진 인과가 교차하여 반복적으로 순환하는 흐름을 조형적으로 풀어낸 것으로 보인다.
이를 좀 더 살펴보자면, 작품 설치의 기본적인 구성 요소는 단순하고, 서로 다른 모습으로 나타나지만, 각자의 역할을 충실하게 해내고 있다. 이렇게 개별적인 요소들이 연결된 인과의 결과로 나타나는 그의 작업은 환상적인 신비로운 공간이 아니라 현실에 존재하는 실제의 것이 된다. 또한 선, 면, 빛과 같은 서로 다른 오브제들이 가진 유사성과 이질성이 동시에 드러나고 있다. 그러면서 얇고 가벼운 이들이 서로에게 영향을 미치는 관계성의 정도 차이로 인해 자연스럽게 입체적인 깊이감이 생기게 되는 것이다. 그리고 이를 가능하게 하는 것은 결국 관객의 시선이다. 전시장에서 ‘나’의 눈과 하얀 천과 빛이 하나의 인과적 관계로 이어진다. 그러나 관객은 하나의 위치에서 이것을 보는 것이 아니라 계속해서 이동한다. 따라서 우리가 보는 것은 일시적인 상태에 불과하다. 멀리서 전체를 보면서 작품으로 다가가면 점점 볼 수 있는 시야가 좁아진다. 옆으로 이동하면 보이지 않던 열린 공간이 나타난다. 그곳으로 들어가 그 내부의 천과 천 사이의 공간과 그곳에 놓인 노출된 하얀 빛을 보게 되거나 밖을 보면 또 다른 장면이 펼쳐진다. 이렇게 그의 하얀 천과 빛은 우리의 시선에 따라 가려짐과 드러남을 통해 계속해서 움직이며, 다중의 인과성을 만들어 낸다. 이에 따라 느껴지는 여러 감각은 작가의 이전 작업이 가지고 있는 완결성을 벗어나 공간이 가지고 있는 자유로운 리듬과 울림을 관객에게 온전히 맡기려는 작가의 태도에 기인한 것이다.
정리해 보자면, 그는 《white》 전시에서 단순한 천과 빛의 설치를 통해 입체 조형의 형태와 구조를 획득하여, 공간에 이미 존재하는 것을 그저 실체화시킨 듯한 작업을 선보이고 있다. 그리고 관객인 우리는 눈과 여러 감각으로 오브제와 오브제 사이의 간극 그리고 ‘나’ 사이의 연결로 귀결되는 작업을 마주하게 된다. 이렇게 그가 특정 공간에 드러낸 그 대상을 통해 느끼는 감각적 나타남은 관객, 작가, 오브제가 서로에게 소급되는 인과의 관계로 이어진다. 그것은 순환적이고 반복적이며, 명확하지만 모호하고, 일시적으로 나타난 것이지만, 무엇도 될 수 있는 자유로움을 획득한다. 그렇기에 그의 작업은 마치 그 자리에 있었지만 보이지 않았던 것이 비로소 눈앞에 드러난 것처럼 느껴진다. 따라서 우리가 이것을 본다는 것은 공간과 시간 그리고 오브제의 숨겨진 차원에 내재하고 있는 감각을 발견해 내는 일이 될 것이다. 물론 이 설치 작업이 가진 형상은 섬광처럼 일시적으로 나타났다가 어느 순간 사라질 것이다. 그렇다고 해서 우리는 우리 눈에 보이는 것 뒤, 다시 말해 그 너머를 미리 상상할 필요는 없다. 우리가 집중해야 하는 것은 전시장에 들어설 때부터 나갈 때까지 만나게 되는 다시 오지 않을 그날, 그곳의 공기로 채워진 하나의 입체적 조형과 개별의 오브제 그 자체의 인과 관계이다. 따라서 그것을 자유로운 시선으로 이리저리 이어 나가면서 느끼고 경험하는 일이 우리에게는 그의 작업을 온전히 감상하는 방법이 될 것이다. 이것은 그의 하얀 빛과 같이 무엇인가를 밝히고, 하얀 천을 하나씩 여닫고 매다는 설치의 과정과 연결되는 것이기도 하다. 그리고 바로 이런 점이 이번 전시에서 오종이 그날 그곳에 있는 울림을 우리에게 꺼내어 놓아 현현(顯現)하게 만드는 방식이다.
