<서로 마주 보는 풍경>

권도연은 《북한산》, 《야간행》 연작을 통해 북한산을 떠돌며 살고 있는 들개와 어두운 저녁에 발견되는 야생 동물을 꾸준히 따라다니며, 이들의 모습이 담긴 풍경을 사진으로 담아왔다. 이 동물들은 모두 자신의 의지와는 상관없이 인간에 의해 변화된 생태계에 적응한 모습으로 나타난다. 이번 전시 《반짝반짝》도 다루는 대상에 있어서는 이전 작업의 연장선에서 진행된 것이라 보아도 무방하다. 그렇지만 이번 연작들은 이전의 작업과는 다른 분위기를 보여주고 있는데, 이 부분을 읽어가는 것이 그동안 그가 선보였던 작업을 이해하는 또 다른 방법이 되리라 생각한다. 우선 작가가 작업을 해나가는 과정에서 동물을 만나게 되는 상황을 떠올려 보자. 작가의 경험과는 다르겠지만 우리도 한 번쯤은 도시의 거리를 걷다가 예상하지 못한 어떤 동물을 목격한 경험들이 있을 것이다. 이런 상황은 대부분 놀랍거나 당황하거나 경이롭거나 재미있거나 이상한 감정을 불러일으킨다. 그리고 우리는 스마트폰을 통해 사진으로 기록하려 한다. 그렇다면 왜 그것을 평소와는 다른 감각으로 인식하는 것인가에 대해 생각해 보면, 우리는 반려동물을 제외한 다른 생명체 특히 동물을 다양하게 접하고 있지 않다는 것을 알게 된다. 하지만 그들의 존재가 아주 낯선 것은 아닌데 이들은 동물원이나 수족관에 가서 관람하거나 TV 다큐멘터리나 온라인에서 사진이나 동영상을 통해 경험하기 때문이다. 이는 특정한 장소와 시간에 종속된 그들을 우리가 목적성을 가지고 보러 가거나 검색을 통해 찾아내는 지식의 축적에 지나지 않는다. 그러나 다큐멘터리 사진처럼 보이는 그의 사진은 여기서 우리와는 조금 다른 갈래의 길을 선택하고 있다. 이것은 작가와 나눈 대화로 미루어 보면, 그의 작업은 단순히 그것을 보고 카메라에 담기 위해서 움직인 것이 아니라 이런 상황에 익숙해지고 그들과 친숙해져 서로의 경계심과 불안함을 감소시키기 위해 노력하는 과정으로 보인다는 점이다. 물론 작가의 이러한 태도를 그들에 대한 애정으로 볼 수도 있겠지만, 그런 이유보다는 무엇인가를 제대로 직시하기 위해서 다시 말해 ‘나’와 ‘그’가 함께 놓이기 위한 행위이다. 그렇기에 우리가 이 작품 앞에 서면, 아마도 처음에는 앞에서 이야기한 것과 유사한 낯선 상황으로 나타나는 풍경을 마주하게 될 것이며, 그 이후에는 그것에 익숙해지면서 비로소 보이게 되는 것을 인지하게 된다. 이렇게 우리는 작가와는 다르게 압축된 시간으로 나타나는 풍경을 보기 위해서 먼저 그의 작업에 익숙해질 시간이 필요하다.

그렇다면 바로 《반짝반짝》의 작품 앞에 서보자. 흑백의 채도로만 이루어진 풍경에는 카메라 플래시 빛이나 가로등이나 건물의 인공적인 불빛만이 존재한다. 이러한 모습은 연극의 무대, 사건의 현장처럼 보이기도 한다. 빛을 통해서 어둠으로부터 드러나는 풍경에는 무엇으로 이어지고 연결되는 길과 다리, 저 멀리 보이는 도시의 모습과 강, 그리고 풀숲이 나타난다. 그리고 좀 더 눈을 옮겨 살펴보다 보면 그곳에서 토끼, 고양이, 삵, 수달, 너구리, 올빼미, 고라니, 민물가마우지, 갈매기 등 다양한 동물이 드러난다. 이들은 어떤 풍경에서는 카메라를 의식한 듯 반짝이는 눈빛을 보여주기도 하고 대부분은 자신이 하려는 일을 자연스럽게 하는 모습이 포착되어 있다. 따라서 도시와 그곳에 살고 있는 동물을 보여주는 이와 같은 사진은 자연스럽게 생태적인 문제, 인간과의 관계를 포함한 사회적인 이야기를 다루고 있는 것으로 이해하게 된다. 그렇지만 이런 이야기는 이전의 그의 작업에 대한 글에 많이 언급되었으므로 여기서는 다루지 않으려 한다. 여기서는 이번 전시에서 그가 무엇인가를 보기 위해 찾아 나서는 반복적 행위를 통해 어떤 대상을 인식하며, 이를 사진 작업으로 옮겨 우리에게 보여주고자 하는 풍경의 본질이 무엇인지 살펴보도록 하겠다. 먼저 그의 사진에서 보이는 시간에서부터 시작해 공간으로 넘어가 보자. 그가 만나는 동물이 나타나 눈에 띄기 시작하는 시간은 밝은 낮이 아니라 해가 지기 시작하는 어둠의 시간이다. 작가는 인간의 시각이 불능상태에 이르러 완전히 어떤 대상이 감추어지는 어두운 밤을 지나 다시 밝음이 찾아오는 새벽의 시간 동안 그들을 찾아 나선다. 이렇게 그는 이들을 만나기 위해 많은 날의 밤을 맞이하며 길을 나서면서 만날 수도 있고 만나지 못할 수도 있는 시간을 보냈다. 이 시간의 궤적을 통해 작가가 우리에게 보여주는 것은 흐릿한 경계의 시공간에서 나타나는 명확한 존재인 동물이다. 그런데 거기에 담긴 것이 동물뿐이었던가? 위에서 잠시 언급한 것과 같이 이 사진에는 다양한 대상들이 동시에 담겨 있다. 이는 단순히 어떤 풍경 속에 있는 동물을 찍기 위한 것이 아니라 오히려 그들을 따라가면서 사진에 담아낼 때야 비로소 드러나는 장면으로 보인다. 여기에는 익숙하면서도 낯선 분위기로 다가오는 나무, 풀숲, 강, 배, 어구 장비, 아파트, 다리, 난간, 자전거 도로, 가로등, 쓰레기통, 간판들이 나타난다. 이는 앨리스가 토끼를 따라가다가 새로운 시공간으로 넘어가듯이 이미 정해지고 확실한 길에서 이탈하는 상황처럼 되어간다. 이렇게 드러난 것들로 채워진 공간들은 하나로 이어진 장소처럼 보이기도 하지만 세상과 분리된 섬처럼 보이기도 한다. 이처럼 다양한 경계선이 교차하고 있는 서로 중첩된 복잡한 공간들은 평면적이면서 입체적인 장면을 만들어 낸다. 결국 그가 동물을 만나러 다닌 축적된 시간을 통해 드러나는 시공간은 그 순간, 그 장소에 존재하는 모든 존재가 가진 각자의 상대적인 위치와 삶을 고스란히 가시화하고 있다.

이제 다시 《반짝반짝》의 풍경을 바라보자. 그곳에는 다양한 길이나 있다. 이 길은 이곳과 저곳을 연결하기도 하지만 이것과 저것을 구분하는 경계가 되기도 한다. 또한 인간의 길은 눈에 잘 띄고 동물이 다니는 길은 우리 눈에 보이지 않는다. 우리가 보는 풍경에는 이것과 저것 사이를 갈라놓는 시간과 공간적 거리로 인해 드러나는 여러 층위의 것들이 뒤엉켜 있다. 이렇게 그가 보여주는 풍경은 인공과 자연의 경계, 보이는 길과 보이지 않는 길로 연결되는 명확하면서도 모호한 공간을 보여준다. 그러나 이는 기묘하고 환상적인 분위기를 만들기 위한 것이 아니다. 이러한 구성은 오히려 우리가 의식하지 못하고 우리의 영역이라고 생각해 온 지형도를 다시 생각하게 만든다. 그렇다면 그의 작업에서 길은 어떻게 사용되고 있는 것일까? 우리에게 보이는 동물은 모두 길이라는 경계에 자리 잡고 있다. 그들이 모습을 드러내는 위치에 도달하는 것은 우리와는 다른 그들만의 길을 통해서이다. 하지만 그의 사진에서 인간의 길과 그들의 길은 완전히 다르게 구분되는 것이 아니라 복잡하게 교차하고 이어지며, 우리 눈에 보이지는 않지만 공유되고 있다. 따라서 길로 구분되는 경계 사이에 있는 동물의 풍경은 그들을 보고 있는 우리가(작가를 포함하여) 서로 하나의 공간에 있음을 충분히 느끼게 해준다. 이렇게 작가는 그들을 이러한 두 세계 사이를 유령처럼 떠도는 것과 같은 상상의 이미지가 아닌 현실에 실재하는 존재 그 자체로 인식하게 만든다. 그렇기에 그의 작품에서 동물은 하나의 풍경 속에 작은 일부분으로 나타나지만, 점점 더 우리의 눈에 선명하게 보이기 시작한다. 그리고 이와 같은 풍경을 보는 동안 우리는 작가가 그들을 만나기 위한 길과 동물이 이동하는 길에 더해 작품을 보는 ‘나’의 길을 연결하게 되며, 하나의 시공간 속에 잠시나마 같이 머무르게 된다. 또 다른 한편으로 그의 작업에서 나타난 길을 보다 보면, 풍경 속 동물이 어디에서부터 나타나서 어디로 가는지 궁금해지는 만큼 ‘나’는 내가 걷는 길 위에서 무엇을 만나게 되었을 때 그것을 정말로 보고 있었는지 스스로 묻게 된다. 이렇게 그의 풍경을 본다는 것은 어떤 것을 지식적 대상으로 이해하는 것이 아니라 충분히 보고 느끼며 감각적 대상으로 인식하고 있는지에 대해 스스로 고민하게 만들고 있다.

이와 같은 그의 작업에서 우리는 어떤 질감을 느낄 수 있는데, 그것은 빛과 어둠 사이의 명확한 구분이 이루어지면서도 서로의 경계가 혼재된 표면을 통해 나타난다. 그것은 그곳에 존재하는 동물이 가진 생과 사의 사이에 존재하는 삶이 드러나는 그 명확하면서도 흐릿한 풍경을 채우고 있는 생생한 공기이다. 따라서 전시 제목인 《반짝반짝》을 통해 그의 풍경이 담고 있는 공기에 대한 것으로 이야기를 마무리하도록 하겠다. 이 전시에서 반짝반짝이 의미하는 것은 플래시를 터트리는 카메라에 의해 동물의 눈이 빛나는 것이 포착되는 것에서 착안하긴 하였지만, 그와 동시에 우리의 시선에서 멀어져 있던 어떤 것이 눈에 맺히는 현상을 비유하는 것이기도 하다. 그것은 일방적인 우리의 관찰에 기인하는 것이 아니라 그들도 우리를 바라보게 되는 다시 말해 오랜 시간 동안 바라보던 서로의 시선이 이어지는 찰나의 순간에서 느끼게 되는 생생한 감각이 아닐까? 그렇다면 그에게 있어 야생 동물과 생태계를 보호하기 위한 어떤 실질적인 행위 이전에 우리가 해야 하는 것은 저 멀리 감춰지고 사라져 버린 것을 다시 인식하고 그들과 눈을 맞추는 일일 것이다. 이는 우리가 그의 작품을 정확히 보기 위해 눈을 그 이미지에 적응시키는 시간이 필요한 것과 같이 그 어색함과 반복적인 만남을 통해 익숙함 사이를 오가는 시간이 지나야 가능한 일이다. 여기서 중요한 것은 서로가 마주하는 그 일순간의 연결과 경계심과 놀라움을 벗어나 긴장감을 해소하는 과정이다. 그런 후에야 우리는 비로소 그때까지 잊고 있었던 빈 곳에 드러나는 무엇인가를 보게 된다. 이를 위해 작가는 자신의 작업에 개인적인 감정을 넣기보다는 한 발 뒤로 물러나 카메라를 통해 객관적으로 포착되는 사진을 이용하여 이를 전달하고자 한다. 그는 이런 방식으로 우리를 그들이 보낸 시간 가운데로 불러내 우리가 살고 있는 공간과 그 안에 존재하는 것들의 모습을 재인식하게 만든다. 지금까지 살펴본 것과 같이 그가 작업을 통해 공감을 끌어내는 방식은 어떤 특별한 사건을 통해 이야기를 전달하여 어떤 감정을 불러일으키기보다는 자신의 작업 과정을 압축한 풍경으로 우리를 최대한 다가오도록 하는 것이다. 결국 권도연의 사진은 우리가 미처 인식하지 못하는 것을 다시 볼 수 있도록 또 다른 문을 열어 보이려는 행위의 결과이며, 그의 풍경 전반에서 느껴지는 그 시공간을 채우고 있는 모호한 경계 사이에 존재하는 것들의 ‘반짝임’이 만들어 내는 공기이다. 그리고 이것이 그가 우리와 그것을 서로 마주 보게 하려는 ‘반짝반짝’한 풍경의 본질이다.

Scenes Facing Each Other

Gwon Do-yeon has consistently captured landscapes with wild dogs wandering around Bukhansan Mountain and wild animals found in the murky night in his series of photographs such as Nocturama and Bukhansan. All of these animals appear to have adapted to ecosystems changed by humans. While this art show Twinkle is seen as an extension of his previous exhibitions in terms of subject matter, the works in this series carry a distinct atmosphere compared to his earlier pieces. Exploring this new aspect of his work provides viewers with another perspective on the body of work he has presented so far. First of all, we can come up with some situation where the artist comes across an animal in the process of working. We all might have experienced unexpectedly coming across some wild animal at least once while walking the streets of the city. Such a situation can evoke feelings of amazement, wonder, amusement, or weirdness. And, we try to record or take pictures of these experiences with our smartphones. If we think about why we find this so strange, we realize that we haven’t come into contact with a diversity of other living things, especially animals, save for companion animals. And yet, they are not completely unfamiliar to us, because we have seen them at zoos and aquariums or in photos and videos online or in TV documentaries. These encounters are often purposeful and driven by our desire to gain knowledge or experience. However, Gwon Do-yeon's photographic work, although documentary in style, appears to be motivated by something different. Based on my conversation with the artist, his intention seems to be less about merely capturing these animals in photographs and more about reducing feelings of wariness and anxiety by immersing viewers in these situations so they can become more familiar with them. Indeed, the artist's approach can be interpreted as stemming from his affection for these animals, but it goes beyond that. It's an act of deliberately bringing "me" (the human observer) and "them" (the wild animals) together in the same frame to confront something more deeply. Standing in front of his works, viewers go through a process of getting accustomed to unfamiliar scenes. Initially, his photographs may appear as unfamiliar or even unsettling situations, as they capture animals in their natural settings, often in proximity to human-made environments. However, as viewers spend more time with the artwork, they may begin to notice subtleties and details that were initially obscured. This process of acclimatization mirrors the artist's own journey of becoming familiar with these situations, and it invites viewers to engage more deeply with the scenes presented in the photographs.

So, let’s stand in front of works on show at the exhibition Twinkle. These artworks feature striking black-and-white scenes illuminated by camera flashlights and artificial lights, such as streetlights and lights from buildings, reminiscent of theater stages or incident scenes. These scenes emerge out of the darkness into light, incorporating elements like roads, bridges, distant cities, rivers, and thickets. And if we look a little further, we can see a diversity of animals there such as rabbits, cats, leopard cats, otters, raccoon dogs, owls, water deer, freshwater cormorants, and seagulls. In some scenes, they show sparkling eyes as if they are aware of the camera, but most animals are doing their own thing. Thus, these photographs featuring wild animals inhabiting cities are thought to be addressing ecological issues, animal relationships with humans, and social narratives. These perspectives have been mentioned many times in previous articles about his work, so I will not discuss them here. In this exhibition, we will examine the subject matter he searches for and the nature of the landscapes he tries to show in photography. Starting from the time of day in his photos, we move to spaces he explores. In Gwon's photographs, the journey begins with the time of night, not broad daylight, when he encounters animals. His exploration continues at dawn, when the world emerges from the darkness of night, revealing objects that were previously concealed. To do this, he spent many days and nights on the road looking for animals but these chance encounters are somewhat rare. Through this exploration of time, Gwon Do-yeon presents to us the animal as a distinct presence that emerges from the blurred boundaries of space and time. But, more than animals are captured in his photos. As briefly mentioned above, his photographs capture a wide array of objects at the same time. This is not simply to take pictures of animals in a certain landscape, but rather to capture the scene that is revealed through this encounter. These photographs feature trees, grass, rivers, boats, fishing gear, apartments, bridges, guardrails, bike lanes, street lights, trash cans, and signs. Just as Alice crosses into a new space and time while chasing a rabbit, Gwon deviates from a predetermined and definite path. The spaces revealed may seem like one connected place, but they also are like isles separated from the world. These complex overlapping spaces where various boundaries intersect create a two-dimensional yet three-dimensional scene. Ultimately, the space and time unveiled through the cumulative moments he spent encountering animals fully visualizes the relative positions and lives of all beings existing at that moment and place.

Now let’s look at the scenes on show at the exhibition Twinkle again. There are various paths there. A path connects here and there, but it is also a boundary that separates this from that. Paths for humans are easily visible while paths for animals are somewhat invisible to our eyes. The scene we observe is a complex interweaving of elements in multiple layers, separated by temporal and spatial distances that distinguish this from that. The scene he showcases in this way suggests the boundary between artificiality and nature and a clear yet ambiguous space connected by visible and invisible paths. And yet, this is not intended to evoke a weird and visionary atmosphere. This composition actually makes us reconsider the topographical map we haven’t perceived as our own domain. If so, how is the path used in his work? All the animals in his photos are situated on the border of a path. It is through their own path, different from ours, that they reach the place where they appear. In his photos, the paths taken by humans and animals are not entirely separate; instead, they intricately intersect and connect with each other. They are shared even though they are invisible to our eyes. Accordingly, the scene of animals that are on the border distinguished by a path has us (as well as the artist) feel that we are in one space. Like this, Gwon enables us to perceive them as real beings rather than conceived images that hover like specters between these two worlds. An animal in his work appears as a tiny part of the scene, but it becomes more clearly visible to our eyes. While looking at these scenes, we connect ‘our way’ to the way to come across animals and the way through which they move, staying in one space and time together. When we look at the paths in his pieces, we not only wonder where the animals in his scenes come from and where they go, but we also ask ourselves what we are truly seeing when encountering something where we walk. Viewing his scenes in this manner forces us to ponder whether we perceive something as a sensory object or understand it as an object of knowledge.

We can feel some texture in his work like this. This emerges out of the surface where a clear distinction between bright and dark states is achieved, but the boundaries between them are mixed. That is the vivid atmosphere that fills up a distinct yet blurry scene disclosing an animal’s life that exists there. I will conclude my discussion of the atmosphere within his scenes with a reference to the exhibition title, Twinkle. Derived from capturing an animal's sparkling eyes with the camera flash, the significance of 'twinkle' in this exhibition serves as a metaphor for capturing something that eludes our direct perception. This isn’t due to our one-sided observation, but rather a vivid sensation that we get when they also look at us, in other words, in the fleeting moment when we look at each other. Therefore, our first step towards any practical action to protect wild animals and the ecosystem should involve reevaluating what has been hidden or overlooked and establishing a connection with them. This can only be achieved by allowing time to bridge the initial unfamiliarity or discomfort and transform it into familiarity through repeated encounters, much like the process of adjusting our eyes to perceive the images in his works accurately. What matters here is the connection that occurs in the moment when we come face to face with these beings, as well as the gradual process of easing the tension that arises initially from apprehension and surprise. Gwon's approach to his photography involves conveying his personal emotions through the lens of the camera and capturing these emotions objectively. This allows the viewers to immerse themselves in the moments he experienced, fostering a fresh perspective on the spaces we inhabit and the entities that coexist within them. As we have reviewed so far, he elicits empathy through his work by bringing us as close as possible to scenes compressively showing his working process rather than evoking any emotion. His work serves as a portal that unveils what often goes unnoticed, inviting us to witness the nuanced and enigmatic aspects of space and time. The 'twinkle' scenes he presents serve as a means to confront what resides in these ambiguous boundaries, sparking reflection and connection. This is thought of as the nature of his twinkle scenes.
